  1. 1767-1834. Australian colonist, a pioneer of
  2. sheep breeding and vine growing. He
  3. quarrelled with successive governors of New
  4. South Wales, and, when arrested by William
  5. Bligh, stirred up the Rum Rebellion 1808, in
  6. which Bligh was himself arrested and deposed.
  7. Born in Devon, England, MacArthur went to
  8. Sydney in 1790, and began experiments in
  9. sheep breeding in 1794, subsequently
  10. importing from South Africa the merino
  11. strain. In later years he studied viticulture
  12. and planted vines from 1817, establishing the
  13. first commercial vineyard in Australia.
